At the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2026, also known as Summer Davos, one question prompted broad reflection across industries.

Is green manufacturing merely a cost, or a new engine for growth, innovation, and competitive differentiation?

Across the healthcare and biopharmaceutical value chain, sustainability is no longer a topic that sits apart from business strategy. It is evolving from a baseline of corporate responsibility into a core capability for creating business value. Companies are expected to set science-based climate change targets and net-zero commitments, reduce Scope 3 value-chain carbon emissions, quantify product carbon footprints, respond to global green procurement requirements, and disclose environmental performance with greater transparency.

This shift is being accelerated by policies and market mechanisms in major countries and regions. Environmentally preferable purchasing requirements in the United States, sustainable procurement guidance in China, sustainable product procurement criteria in Europe, NHS England's Evergreen Sustainable Supplier Assessment, France's medicines carbon footprint assessment methodology, and Australia's sustainable procurement policies are all pointing in the same direction: companies are encouraged to place greater emphasis on product-level environmental performance and supply-chain transparency.

Against this backdrop, Green CRDMO is positioned not as an add-on, but as a bridge that turns governance requirements into business value. In manufacturing, WuXi Biologics continues to leverage single-use technology (SUT) and process innovation to scale green manufacturing in practice. Compared with traditional stainless-steel processes, SUT can save up to 70% of water resources, reduce resource consumption by approximately 33%, and lower climate change impact by approximately 40%. The environmental impact of its end-of-life treatment is only 1–3%, making the overall impact negligible. Nonetheless, the company remains committed to responsible waste management through zero waste to landfill, waste-to-energy treatment, continuous SUT waste reduction, and exploration of more environmentally friendly and regulatory-feasible SUT recycling solutions, further reducing environmental impact in manufacturing.

In addition, combining WuXiUI™ and SUT can achieve up to an 80% product-carbon-footprint (PCF) reduction per gram of protein, providing clients with manufacturing solutions that deliver both environmental and operational value. WuXi Biologics also leverages its in-house PCF and lifecycle assessment (LCA) modeling and calculation capabilities to support cradle-to-gate lifecycle carbon footprint assessments, empowering clients to build product-level carbon transparency. With clearer, traceable carbon data, clients are better equipped to make low-carbon decisions, manage Scope 3 emissions, and drive value-chain decarbonization.

WuXi Biologics integrates climate action, resource efficiency, circular economy practices, water stewardship and green innovation into daily operations across its global network, using lean management and digitalization to drive continuous improvement. In 2025, more than 95% of WBS Kaizen projects generated ESG benefits, including reductions in carbon emissions, water consumption and waste generation. The company's Green CRDMO White Paper, published in 2025, compiles 242 energy-saving projects across five key energy-saving scenarios, 12 typical energy systems and 25 technology categories, offering practical green showcases for the industry. These energy-saving projects are expected to continue delivering significant ESG benefits and cost-saving value over the next decades.

For green manufacturing to transition from aspiration to action, accurate measurement is essential. At the corporate level, WuXi Biologics continues to strengthen its greenhouse gas inventory and carbon management system, conducting annual Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 greenhouse gas accounting — in accordance with ISO 14064 and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol — to systematically identify major emission sources across its global operations and value chain. At the product level, WuXi Biologics has built product carbon footprint and lifecycle assessment capabilities aligned with ISO 14067, ISO 14040 and related standards, helping clients enhance their product-level carbon transparency.

In 2025, the company's new carbon target matrix — which was validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) — set emission reduction targets and pathways for its own operations while also committing to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050, driving coordinated decarbonization across global sites and the supply chain.

At facilities throughout the company's global network, green concepts are being translated into concrete practices: rooftop solar power at the Hangzhou site, water excellence stewardship at the Wuxi site, 100% green electricity at the Dundalk, Ireland site, high-efficiency utility systems at the Cranbury, New Jersey site in the United States, and GREEN Mark Gold^PLUS green building standards at the Singapore site.
